Sharon
Koala Name: Boat Harbour Sharon
Rescued: December 2023
Released: July 2024
Reason Sharon came into care: Sharon came to us as she and her mother, Mikayla, were sadly hit by a motor vehicle in Boat Harbour. Luckily, this accident was witnessed by a member of the public who stopped and assisted both by bundling them up carefully in a towel and bringing them straight to the Port Stephens Koala Hospital. Sharon was less then 1kg when she was admitted with her Mum, so still reliant upon her Mum for milk and teaching her how to be a koala.
The injuries Mikayla sustained, while bad, were able to be managed, with the help of the veterinary team, and Mikayla recovered sufficiently to a point where she was able to continue to raise Sharon.
Treatment provided: Once admitted with her mother, Sharon was given a full health check to ensure she did not sustain any injuries. Luckily, her injuries were very minor, needing little to no treatment by the veterinary team.
Under the watchful eyes of her Mum, and the Hospital team, Sharon quickly grew into a very healthy young koala. Once she had matured enough, and that she would be able to manage on her own naturally in the wild, she was released in a nearby area, that was frequented by other koalas.
Estimated cost of treatment while in care: $2,000
