A heartfelt way to give koalas the best chance
Koalas are one of Australia’s most loved iconic animals, and one of the most vulnerable in our bush landscapes.
Every koala in our care has a story. Some come to the hospital injured. Others arrive sick, orphaned or displaced from a habitat that no longer exists. And each one deserves the opportunity to thrive.
Some of are unable to return to the bush as wild koalas due to long-term health issues. But their lives still need fighting for. As permanent residents of our hospital, they receive ongoing expert care, a safe home and plenty of eucalyptus leaves – these are our adoptees.
For a $50 contribution, you can choose one of these marsupials to support and cheer on. Your adoption fee contribution gives them – and other koalas and native animals – the best possible quality of life in our care, every single day.
We hold Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. In Australia, this means your koala adoption is tax-deductible. You’ll receive a receipt, including your line items and our ABN.

How ‘adopt a koala’ works
Whether you want to adopt a koala for yourself, as a gift, or in memory of someone who loved wildlife…here’s how it works.
Step 1. Choose your koala
Select a resident koala that captures your heart for yourself or as a gift. Your adoption is a symbolic gesture of support. You can’t take it home or have a cuddle.
Step 2: Process your adoption
Complete your adoption through our secure online form. You can choose a one-off adoption or an annual contribution.
Step 3: Get your adoption certificate
Once your adoption is processed, you or your recipient will receive a personalised digital Adoption Certificate and a short story about your chosen koala.
We have a philosophy of minimal handling to reduce stress and help koalas #StayWild and healthy.
Step 4: Support koala care
Your adoption fee helps fund the care of our koalas at our hospital, including treatment, rescue work, food and rehabilitation.
Step 5: Get updates on your impact
Every three months, you’ll receive our hospital newsletter, Koala Kapers, with updates and photos of our koala residents so you can see the ongoing impact of your symbolic adoption.
What our adopters say
Hello Tilly, I’m so grateful that you are enjoying life with your cousins and being well looked after by the staff at PSKH. I hope my small donation can help to continue to make your life peaceful and happy.
Taryn, Australia | Adopted Tilly
All of the animals here are so cute. We hope Maree and the other animals get all of the care that they need, and we are excited to help with Maree’s quality of life. We love you, Maree!
Mackenzie and Matt, Canada | Adopted Maree
My wife Denise is a big fan of koalas – they became her favourite animal during her time in Australia some years ago. For our anniversary, I adopted Midnight Rose for her. Although we live in Germany, I truly appreciate the important work you do for these wonderful animals. I hope our donation can help, even if only a little.
Matthias, Germany | Adopted Midnight Rose
I love the work PSKH does and it’s so wonderful to have little, but fast-growing Birubi in the world. I think our beautiful koalas are so lucky to have this service available to them. I also really love how you’ve stepped up the newsletter in recent years – it’s such a good read! I will keep contributing in some small way to help you keep looking after these precious native animals.
Bernadette, Australia | Adopted Birubi
My partner and I recently stayed at the Sanctuary. It was fantastic! Congratulations to all those involved in this wonderful project. Hoping the breeding program with Howie is a success.
Maree, Australia | Adopted Howie
Types of koala adoption
Personal adoption
Want to support our precious koalas? Adopt one of our resident koalas that stole your heart – and follow their journey with us.
Gift adoption
Looking for a unique gift for an animal lover or conservation enthusiast? Adopt a koala on someone’s behalf for a present they won’t forget.
In Memorial adoption
Honour the memory of someone special by adopting a koala in their name. It’s a meaningful tribute that helps protect wild lives.
For each type of adoption, you can choose either a one-off or annual ongoing contribution. An annual contribution makes a longer-term difference and delivers consistent support for your koala.
What your adoption fee covers
Every koala adoption helps cover the costs associated with caring for our koalas and other native wildlife. Here’s what your support helps fund:
- Medical treatment, medicines and vet care
- Food and daily care
- Safe shelter and recovery enclosures
- Tree planting to secure a sustainable food supply
- Research into koala disease and treatment
- Education campaigns and community awareness
- Rescue operations and equipment

Did you know?
It costs more than $16,000 to rescue, care for, rehabilitate and release a single koala back into the bush where they belong.
Did you know?
Our rescued koalas used to be named by the person who found or rescued them. Now, volunteers nominate names, and one is randomly drawn from a hat.
Did you know?
Every koala in our care eats up to one kilo of eucalyptus leaves a day. That’s a lot of leaf picking for our dedicated pickers.
Success Story
Reggie’s journey back to the bush
When Reggie arrived at Port Stephens Koala Hospital in December 2025, he was a young sub-adult male who had likely only recently left his mother to find a territory of his own. He was very unwell, with discharge from both his eyes and nose. A CT scan revealed pneumonia, and testing confirmed he was also positive for chlamydia.

See the impact we’re making
Our impact is measured in many ways, including rescues, recoveries, releases, habitat restoration, community awareness and increased knowledge.
